Komentariat browser extension — last updated June 2026

Komentariat is a browser extension that lets you read and post comments on any webpage, independently of that page's own comment system. This policy explains what data the extension collects, why, and how it is handled.

1. Data stored locally on your device

The extension stores the following in your browser's local extension storage (chrome.storage.local). This data never leaves your device except as described in section 2.

Account session token and username	Keeps you logged in between browser sessions without re-entering your password.
Extension settings (auto-activate on/off, per-site and per-domain disable list)	Remembers your preferences across pages and browser restarts.
Open chat threads and unread counts	Restores chat windows when you revisit a page.
Current tab URL (temporary)	Used only to route API requests for the active tab; cleared when the tab closes.

2. Data sent to Komentariat servers

When the extension is active on a page it contacts komentariat.abilab.net. The following information is transmitted:

Page URL — sent when you activate the extension on a page, post a comment, or when auto-activate loads the comment badge. Used to associate comments with the correct page.
Comment text — sent only when you explicitly submit a comment or reply.
Chat messages — sent only when you use the in-extension chat feature.
Vote actions — sent when you upvote or downvote a comment.
Login credentials — your email and password are sent over HTTPS during sign-in only. Passwords are never stored by the extension.
Presence signal — a lightweight ping is sent periodically while the sidebar is open so other users on the same page can see that someone is viewing it. No browsing history is recorded beyond the single currently-active page URL.

All communication uses HTTPS. No data is sold or shared with third parties.

3. Data we do NOT collect

We do not track your browsing history. The extension only contacts our servers for pages where you have explicitly activated it or where auto-activate is enabled.
We do not use advertising trackers, analytics SDKs, or third-party scripts.
We do not read page content, form inputs, or passwords on the sites you visit.
We do not collect your IP address beyond what is inherent in any HTTPS connection.

4. Account data

If you create an account, your email address and chosen display name are stored on our servers in order to identify your comments and enable other users to connect with you. You may delete your account at any time from the account settings page, which permanently removes your profile and comments from our servers.

5. Blocked-sites list

A public list of domains where Komentariat is disabled site-wide is fetched from our server at extension startup. This request carries no personally identifying information.

6. Data retention

Local extension storage is cleared when you log out. Server-side account data is retained until you delete your account. We do not retain page-view logs or presence signals beyond the active session.

7. Children's privacy

Komentariat is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

8. Changes to this policy

If we make material changes we will update the date at the top of this page. Continued use of the extension after a change constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
